GeoServer is a Java-based software that allows users to view and edit geospatial data using open standards proposed by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), providing powerful convenience for map creation and data sharing.
GeoServer is a J2EE implementation of the OpenGIS Web server specification. Using GeoServer, map data can be easily published, allowing users to update, delete, and insert feature data. GeoServer can easily share spatial geographic information among users..

Compatible with WMS and WFS features; supports PostGIS, Shapefile, ArcSDE, Oracle, VPF, MySQL, MapInfo; supports hundreds of projections; can output network maps to jpeg, gif, png, SVG, KML and other formats; can runOn top of any J2EE/Servlet-based container; embeds MapBuilder's AJAX-enabled map client OpenLayers; in addition to many other features.
