What is the Office Open XML file format

Office Open XML

is an XML-based file format published as ECMA-376.It is used as the default file format by Microsoft Office 2007/2010.

There are plans to support this file format in OpenOffice.org for interoperability with Microsoft Office 2007/2010.

The format has 3 main types, 2 minor types as important additions:

WordprocessingML - for word processor documents(The file extension may be docx, docm)

An example is shown below:

SpreadsheetML - for spreadsheet documents (the file extension may bexlsx, xlsm)

PresentationML - for presentation documents (file extensions may be pptx, pptm)

DrawingML - Used by other markup languages to represent graphics data.

VML - legacy vector markup.

Packaging Conventions

OpenXML documents are created by

of flat collections.Each part has a case-insensitive part name consisting of a sequence of segment names separated by slashes (

In most cases, ZIP compression is used to package parts, in this case the term "package" refers to the ZIP archive, and the part refers to the individual files that are archived within it.In this case, the part name is the file path in the archive.

Relationships

Packages and widgets can contain explicit relationships to other widgets as well as external resources.Each explicit relationship has an ID and a type, and the relationship type is named using a URI.An example is shown below:

The set of explicit relationships for each package or part is stored in the relationship part, whose name (or path) follows a specific convention, e.g. a relationship part for a section called "/a/b/c.xml" is called"/a/b/_rels/c.xml.rels".As a special case, the relational part of the package as a whole is called "/_rels/.rels".
