Temelde fonksiyon iki işlemden ibarettir, eğer sayı çift ise 2'ye bölünür ve tek ise 3 katının 1 fazlası alınır. Alınan sonuç sürekli tekrarlanır ve 1 sayısına ulaşılır. Lothar Collatz bu iki işlemin sürekli tekrarlanması ile tüm sayıların 1'e indirilebileceğini iddia eder.
