Transferrin (TF) is a secreted protein belonging to the transferrin family, expressed by the liver and secreted into the plasma.

TF has a molecular weight of approximately 80 kDa and contains two specific high-affinity Fe3+ binding sites.TFs are iron-binding glycoproteins present in plasma that regulate free iron levels in biological fluids, and their main role is to transport iron from the duodenum and leukocyte-macrophages to other tissues.TF is associated with the innate immune system.

In inflammatory states, its levels are reduced.We commonly see increased plasma TF levels in patients with iron deficiency anemia.In contrast, plasma TF levels are generally reduced in iron overloaded and protein malnourished patients.

Recently, TF and its receptors were found to reduce Tumour cells when TF receptors attract antibodies.TF is an acute phase protein, so its levels are decreased in inflammation, Malignant tumor and certain diseases.
